CA Lawmakers are trying to pass a bill named AB 1955.
It is a “Government-Imposed Wall” Between Parent and Child.
If this bill becomes a law, it will do 3 things:
1) Allow schools to keep secrets from parents.
2) Protect teachers who keep secrets from parents.
3) Prevent school districts from passing policies to help inform parents.
What type of secrets will schools be allowed to keep from parents? The school does not have to inform you of the following:
SECRET NAME CHANGE
Your child tells the school to change their name on school records.
SECRET PRONOUN CHANGE
Your daughter tells the school to refer to her as a boy.
Your son tells the school to refer to him as a girl.
SECRET BATHROOM & LOCKER ROOM CHANGE
Your daughter tells the school she will be using the boys’ bathroom.
Your daughter tells the school she will be undressing with the boys in the locker room.
Your son tells the school he will be using the girls’ bathroom.
Your son tells the school he will be undressing with girls in the locker room.
Currently, there are 9 school districts in CA that have passed policies to inform parents when their child requests a name change or to use opposite-sex bathrooms and locker rooms. This bill would make these policies illegal.
You can help stop this bill from becoming law. You can do this by making 2 simple, short phone calls to your elected officials. These phone calls can make a difference. The staff that answer the calls are trained to be polite. You will be treated with respect.
1) Call your assembly member listed below. You say, “Hello, my name is _______. I am a constituent. I oppose AB 1955 and ask the assembly member to vote no.” They may ask for your zipcode. This is to verify that you are in the district. The phone call will be short and last no more than 3 minutes.
Find your Assembly Member by address.
2) Call Governor Newsom’s office at (916) 445-2841. You say, “Hello, my name is _______. I am a California voter. I oppose AB 1955 and ask the Governor to veto the bill.”
3) Ask your family and friends to call.
